Every so often a client asks whether they should have a wardrobe built into the wall or simply buy a good freestanding one. It is a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends. Here is how we think it through.

Where fitted furniture wins
Built-in joinery is unbeatable when you want to use every last centimetre. It runs floor to ceiling with no dust gap on top, wraps around columns and slopes, and turns dead space — under stairs, inside an alcove — into real storage. It also looks calm and seamless, part of the architecture rather than a piece of furniture parked against a wall.
- Maximum storage in a fixed footprint
- A clean, built-in look with no awkward gaps
- Solutions for sloped, curved or irregular walls
- Adds a sense of quality that buyers notice
Where freestanding makes sense
Freestanding pieces have one big advantage: they move. If you rent, if you expect to redecorate often, or if you love rearranging a room, a well-made movable table or sideboard travels with you and adapts to a new layout. A solid dining table or a beautiful cabinet can also become a feature in its own right, rather than blending in.
- Comes with you when you move
- Easy to reposition as your needs change
- Can stand out as a statement piece
- Often a smaller upfront commitment
How we usually advise
For bedrooms, kitchens and any awkward corner, fitted almost always wins — the storage gain and the finished look are worth it. For dining and living rooms, we often mix the two: a built-in media wall or sideboard for the fixed stuff, and a freestanding table and chairs you can move, extend or pass on one day.
